HBHL- 29 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

One of the habits that stuck with me after cleansing, was the idea of having a smoothie every morning for breakfast.  I used to skip breakfast A LOT, thinking that I was "saving" calories and "saving" time, as I cherished my sleep more than eating!  One thing to remember is that it's so important to jump start your metabolism in the morning- but it's CRITICAL to jump start it with the right kinds of foods.

Many of us may think we eat a wholesome breakfast each morning as we fill up on things such as pancakes, bacon, a glass of milk, and coffee.  This type of breakfast is high in refined carbohydrates, low in fiber, high in hydrogenated oils, high in fat, and for those that put cream and sugar into their coffee...even higher in refined carbs, saturated fat, and excess sugar!  All of this promotes diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and depletes the body of vital minerals and nutrients.  After consuming these types of foods you might find yourself suffering from headaches or a runny nose (mostly from the dairy) and without any fiber in your morning meal, you will find yourself getting hungry again by mid morning.

As a suggestion, and for those of you that developed the habit after cleansing... consider continuing with smoothies for breakfast.  Why? Fruit and vegetable smoothies are actually the type of breakfast that can help you reverse obesity by losing weight, and also providing optimal nutrition that helps your digestive tract stay on task AND your immune system function at its best.  A balanced smoothie can also help stabilize blood sugar levels.  There are tons of different recipes to make these high fiber, nutritious, and delicious smoothies!  I have three favorites depending on my mood:  Yummy Green Shake, Chocolate/Banana, or a Berry Shake.  They all provide you with the RIGHT types of foods to jump start your day and get you headed in the right direction.

Weekly Workouts:  To get the full benefits of the HBHL program, I'd like you to get a minimum of 4 workouts.  Do not feel guilty about taking time for you!! You are worth it!!  Try to work in 2 cardio events (walk/run), 1 yoga or flexibility event, and 1 Powerbodyz session (the at-home workout I provide, via this website!)  Add a 5th event (extra yoga/powerbodyz or cardio class) to round out your week, 5 workouts is optimal- 4 is the minimum.  Remember PBz workouts are less than 30 minutes!

Powerbodyz Workout:  There is a new Powerbodyz workout this week.  Again- if you are new to PBz please start with the introductory workout!

Wellness Lesson: Exercise and Detox

I wanted to share an article with you that discusses the detoxification benefits of yoga.  Exercise, in and of itself, enhances the detox process- sweating through your skin (the largest organ in your body) is highly beneficial.  But yoga, offers extra benefits to the body's natural detox process.  Some of you may have noticed that I talk about detoxing our internal organs while performing the twisting exercises in class.  A lot of people don't realize that their lymph system (which is the main system for ridding your body of toxins) has no pump.  Instead it relies on body movement and a  natural flow to circulate the lymph fluids throughout your system.  Basically, if you aren't moving your body around, you aren't moving much lymph fluid and your immune system isn't performing optimally.  Movement and exercise is great.  But, exercises that have you twisting, inverting and moving your arms above your head are especially beneficial to the detoxing process.  Here's the link with more specific info on yoga and detox:

Yoga and Detox
Weekly Challenge:
This week, try to aim for 50% of your meals to include raw foods.  This can be morning smoothies (which are all raw), salad for lunch or with dinner, and snacks such as fruit, nuts, or veggies and hummus.

HBHL- 26 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

As we finish up our cleansing, I wanted to reiterate the importance of not gorging yourselves on your favorite foods.  Hopefully, you have found that you feel better than anything could ever taste, and you won't WANT to go back to your old habits!  But, it's okay to be excited about incorporating some of your old foods back into your meal plans- strawberries, bananas, sweet potatoes, grains, etc.  Just try to reintroduce them one at a time.  Note how your body feels.  Not only that, pay attention to how you sleep, do you notice yourself being extra snotty or bloated after a particular meal?  Remember that food allergies can present themselves in ways other than the normal digestive issues.  Red meat can give some people the night sweats and trouble sleeping.  Dairy gives some people headaches or a runny nose.  Just pay close attention and don't re-introduce too many things at once.  This is the only time in your life you will have a completely CLEAN palate to start with- take advantage of it.

So- what healthy habits will you keep after the Cleanse? Maybe you'll continue to do morning  smoothies or use supergreen powders.  Maybe many of the recipes you tried will become your new family staples, or you'll keep experimenting with the new foods you were introduced to during the 21-day process.  Whatever, it is - I promise you will be changed forever... in a good way.

Wellness lesson:   Oxidation and Anti-Oxidants

Oxidation is the process where oxygen combines with another substance to produce an oxide.  It's a continual process and contributes to human aging.  When we breathe, our bodies convert the oxygen into free radicals.  Some free radicals are necessary, as they help us stay healthy, but an excess of free radicals can occur as we constantly breathe toxins from the air around us (thanks to smog & pollution).

Healthy eating and the ingestion of antioxidants can actually slow the oxidative process and  thus, slow aging of the human body.  Some antioxidants scavenge and then neutralize the harmful free radicals which can cause damage by stripping molecules from lipids, protein, and DNA - leaving cells that are vulnerable to disease.  By eating healthy foods that contain antioxidants you can decrease your risk of harmful free radicals.  Vitamin C, Beta-carotene and Vitamin E are strong antioxidants that are found in leafy green veggies, citrus fruits, cauliflower, strawberries, and sprouts.  Berries are also high in antioxidants- as they help to repair and prevent the stress of oxidation (blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries ranking highest in a 2004 study).

So stay away from too many processed foods, which use preservatives to alter or destroy the natural healthy enzymes, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins found in the original whole food source and contribute to the production of harmful free radicals.  Many whole foods (those which don't require any processing and are in their natural state) have antioxidant properties
that can help you look and feel younger!  Who would say no to that?

HBHL- 23 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

Last week of the Cleanse!! For those of you who started with me- this is the final stretch. You should be proud of your accomplishment- I know your body is SUPER thankful!  I've been hearing such great things from everyone!! Folks are sleeping better, seeing clearer skin, losing the bloat, losing those extra pounds, feeling more energized and awake... and are just all around healthier and in a better mood!! I love it. If you haven't started your Cleanse journey, and are interested, just shoot me an email and I'll help you get started.  The plan is to do the 3 week Cleanse once per year (January) and have Cleanse Maintenance weeks twice per year (once in May and once in Oct).  You can follow along on Facebook or via this blog to stay updated.  For our Cleanse maintenance weeks we will pick the "best of the best" recipes to ensure 1 week of AWESOME and healthy eating.  This is by no means required, but if you are interested, you can join with me in keeping our bodies clean and healthy :)

The other great thing some friends have shared is that they have really paid attention to their eating habits. Just because you go to Starbucks does not mean you have to order a sugar/calorie filled treat along with a pastry snack, EVERY time.  Or just because you are sitting in front of the TV at night it doesn't mean you need to be snacking on something.  Moderation is the key- and finding new healthy ways to satisfy your cravings, is a big part of it.  Need a tasty snack for when you've got the "munchies"? Try these cinnamon treats:

Tasty Cinnamon Snacks

HBHL- Alabama:  What a great 5K we had this weekend in Prattville.  AWESOME job and great turnout from Prattville and even some Montgomery HBHL'ers, despite the dreary weather.  Luckily, it didn't rain on us and it was a great race.  Congrats to our own Whitney Turner (HBHL instructor and running coach!) for her 2nd place finish!  Next race, we WILL have our T-shirts.  The only question is... when's the next race?? I know there are a few coming up (Millbrook 5K trail run and the Seaside Half).  Looking forward for more racing fun- especially as it starts to get warmer :)

Sometimes I know the elliptical may be your form of exercise for the day.  If so- make your elliptical workout count!! DO NOT use the fat burn "low intensity"program and waste your precious time.

**To maximize your time on the elliptical, check out my suggested elliptical workouts from my 6 Nov 11 blog:

Elliptical Workouts- Make it count!

Powerbodyz Workout:  There is a new Powerbodyz workout this week.  Again- if you are new to PBz please start with the introductory workout!

This week's superfood:  Avocados!
Are they a veggie or are they a fruit?  They are a fruit!  Avocados are yummy and delicious, as well as packed with heart-healthy benefits.  They contain the "good" monounsaturated fats that help to lower cholesterol.  Also rich in fiber, folate, potassium, and Vitamin K- avocados have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.  They are high in calories and high in fat (although it's the good kind!) so don't go overboard- but the many benefits make avocados an awesome addition to any meal or snack!

When purchasing avocados- they will yield to gentle pressure if ripe (you don't want them squishy).  If you are using them later, select firm ones.  Trick to ripen them up:  They will ripen faster if you put them in a paper bag along with an apple.

So.... what can I do with avocados?  Luckily, this week's recipe is mango salmon with avocados! Also, you can use them in salads, as a substitute for mayo on sandwiches, in soups, or replace eggs and butter with avocados in baked desserts!  I LOVE making my own home made guacamole, and my absolutely favorite way to eat an avocado is super simple:  cut in half, salted and with a bit of lemon juice or balsamic vinegar.  YUM!!

LOVE this week's recipe- Colorful Mango Salsa Salmon.  It has gotten RAVE reviews for the Cleanse program- yes, there is tons of YUMMY food on the Cleanse.

CLICK HERE for this week's yummy recipe!

Weekly Challenge: Let's finish this last week of the Cleanse!  And then start focusing and preparing yourself for your life post-cleanse. See it as an opportunity and not a daunting challenge.  Remember to eat sweets/processed foods in moderation.  Remember that you can be satisfied from other types of yummy goodies- so keep your pantry/fridge stocked with the good stuff!  You can do it!!

HBHL- 17 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

Hey everyone!! Just finished Week 1 of the Cleanse. The MacAulay's are feeling great.  We've lost our bloats and extra water weight and are starting to sleep better, feel better, etc.  Definitely enjoying the tasty recipes and expanding my palette.  It's great to remember that the Cleanse is not just about de-toxing your body, or losing a few pounds... it's actually about learning more about your personal nutritional habits, getting in tune with your body, and finding new and creative ways to work healthy food into your daily meals.  Just like the concept behind HBHL- it's a slow process where you gradually make small changes that are right for YOU and YOUR FAMILY, eventually developing a healthier lifestyle.

HBHL Alabama:  We've got the Prattville run this week- sign up to run the 5K and meet some other local HBHL'ers!  It's this Sat Jan 21st.  See the HBHL-AL website for more details.  The YogaFit training has moved from March 10-11 to February 25-26 at the Prattville YMCA.  Contact me for more information.

Powerbodyz Workout:
There is a new Powerbodyz workout this week.  Again- if you are new to PBz please start with the introductory workout!

Fitness Lesson: 30 minutes to exercise? What to do?!?!?!?
Did you know that at rest your body burns 1 calorie per minute- 50% of that calorie is derived from carbs and 50% comes from fat.  This 50:50 ratio persists at low-moderate intensity levels of exercise.  As you increase your intensity, your body will start to burn more carbs than fat (60:40 ratio).  Many gym machines (i.e. elliptical or stair master) might offer "fat burner" profiles where you maintain that low intensity, supposedly to burn more "fat" during your 30 minutes.  NOT TRUE.  The amount of fat you burn is directly related to the amount of calories.  Burn more total calories... you burn more fat!  Take the following example:

You exercise for 30 minutes at a "fat burning" low intensity at a 50:50 ratio, expending 150 calories- 75 from carbs, 75 from fat.  OR you can perform a 30 minute higher intensity workout (i.e. a treadmill interval workout or a Powerbodyz workout) at a 60:40 ratio, burning 210 calories- 126 from carbs, 84 from fat.  You are actually burning MORE fat in the second scenario.  Remember it's all about total calories burned!  I know my time is valuable- so maximize your time when you workout!

This week's superfood: Onions!
A lot of our cleansing recipes call for onions.  So, what gives? Is it really worth all of the tears (I know I get TONS when I'm chopping onions) to get the benefits from this pungent vegetable?  Well, onion ingredients actually fight the cold and flu.  The sulfur (tear-inducing compound) contains anti-inflammatory properties that relive aches and congestion.  Some studies suggest that half an onion per day can keep you healthy, especially red onions which contains quercetin.  Quercetin is an anti-oxidant that can fight cancer and has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.  So, don't be afraid to brave a few tears, and add some extra onions to your meal tonight!

Weekly Challenge:
Continue on your Cleanse challenge!! We just finished week 1 and are speeding through week 2.  Good luck if you are just beginning your detox. Keep up with everyone on the HBHL Facebook page, especially if you are interested in trying it but don't know what to expect!

HBHL- 13 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

So how are my cleansers doing?  Almost one week down!!  Woo hoo!  I would give you a great pep talk, but I think our group's Clean Coach, Jessi, did a better job than I could ever do:

"Hey everyone!  I know this first week can be rough, hang in there! Detox really can be uncomfortable but know that you are doing SO much goodness for your body, you will soon be reaping the benefits! Make sure you are all getting plenty of calories, protein & healthy fats (eat until you're about 80% full, satisfied but not stuffed), drinking plenty of water (2-3 liters daily), and resting as much as needed. For headaches and body aches, try some magnesium citrate or Natural Calm, this stuff is amazing! Feel free to send me any questions you have: jessi@cleanprogram.com  You are all amazing! Keep up the great work. The second week is when most people start seeing some amazing benefits, so keep it going. You may start sleeping better, have more energy, clarity of thought, clearer skin, weight loss, better digestion & elimination are all common benefits of the cleanse.  These probably won't pop up all at once, so pay attention and see what changes..."

Also- updates on the Recipe Book- Version 1.  DELETE the Spinach and Kale Soup... not a good one- sorry (it's in week 1 and week 3) and in it's place use the Yummy Black Bean Soup that's on the recipe page of my blog:

CLICK HERE to access the Black Bean Soup Recipe

Last two notes:  I have been told by Jessi that we can have warm soups in the winter.  You do not have to eat them all cold!   Also, make your smoothies to your preferred consistency by either adding extra ice or extra water to the mix!

Join the Healthy Body Healthy Life Facebook page to make sure you don't miss any of these updates!!

Wellness Lesson:  DETOX YOUR SKIN!!!
Skin elimination is an important way to get rid of toxins.  One thing to remember, as you detox your skin might take some of the brunt of the process (i.e. breakouts) which is not uncommon.  However, as Dr Junger points out in his book, "nobody knows your body better than you, so if at any point any of the effects of the program seem alarmingly abnormal, consult your doctor."  Using a sauna, steam room, and hot yoga (obviously in moderation, please) can enhance the detoxification process.  Hot-cold plunges, which you can mimic by alternating between hot and cold water in your shower, can boost circulation and detoxification in your skin (the largest organ in your body).  Dry brushing your skin, with a soft, natural-bristle brush, just prior to taking your shower, can remove dead skin cells, and stimulate your lymph system.  I dry-brush once or twice per week, even when I'm not cleansing! A loofah works really well for this too.

Additional Tip:  Use sesame or coconut oil to moisturize your skin, I can personally attest to softer skin that's 100% chemical free :)

Reminder:  Committing to the HBHL program means educating yourself on health and wellness topics (and I urge you to research further than just my blog), making time for yourself to work out 3-4 times per week (minimum!), and attempting to incorporate some of my weekly challenges.  Right now the Cleanse is our weekly challenge- so more challenges to follow in the near future!

HBHL- 8 Jan 2012

Healthy Body Healthy Lifers,

So... how are my Cleansers doing? I hope things are going well.  I LOVE that you are using the Facebook page to share your stories and experiences.  Keep it up.  There are tons of other folks who are starting next week- and I know they appreciate the advice and tips :)

For all of my Alabama peeps, check out this week's workout schedule and the info on our next 5K race below:

CLICK HERE for local HBHL-AL information

I would LOVE to see more folks signing up for the race.  We've got a little more than a handful signed up so far.  It's on January 21st in Prattville.  If you haven't run/walked a 5K before- this is the perfect time to join us.  Go at your own pace, we have plenty of HBHL'ers to support you!

This week there is a new format for the Powerbodyz workouts!! I have put a warm-up, cool-down, and an introductory PBz workout on You Tube.  It's a private site so you can only access it through www.healthybodyhealthylife.org.  For any of you newbies- please start with the introductory workout so that you get an idea of what Powerbodyz workouts are about.  Below you will find some more information on the Tabata protocol which is what Powerbodyz is based on.  I hope you enjoy the workouts!

I've also included this week's workout.  Since we are cleansing, I've offered quite a few modifications and it's a shorter (less than 20 min workout).  But it is still intense! I did the workout today and really worked my full-body!

CLICK HERE for your Powerbodyz Workouts

Fitness Lesson:  What is Powerbodyz and what does it do for me???

The PowerBodyz workout we do is based on the Tabata protocol.  Dr Tabata's basic premise is that you can get a supra-aerobic cardio workout by increasing your high intensity interval training relative to the rest period. The goal is to improve performance with short training sessions- the base Tabata workout is only 4 minutes long.  Powerbodyz uses this concept but instead of just focusing on athleticism in one area (ie making an athlete a better runner, or a better biker) we will alternate the muscle groups by varying the exercises ensuring you get a FULL-BODY workout- maximizing fat burn, cardiovascular fitness, and anaerobic muscular endurance.  If you want to lose weight, build muscle tone, and/or keep your body from plateauing this type of workout will benefit you!

Check out this website for a little more information on Tabata itself:

Those of you who have been doing the Powerbodyz workouts since last summer should already be noticing the benefits!  The short bursts of intense interval training burn more calories than steady-state cardio workouts.  It's less than 30 minutes of intense activity, and the benefits are exponentially greater (as far as cardiovascular fitness and calorie burn, to name a few)!  So... you could spend 45 minutes to an hour on the stair master/elliptical machine on Thurs... OR spend 30 minutes doing Powerbodyz in the morning!   Now, you do have to work intensely during those short intervals... As I've mentioned during the workout- if you aren't out of breath and sweating, you are not working hard enough!

How does it work exactly?  Powerbodyz gets your heart pumping and your metabolism firing.  You'll build lean muscle mass which will help you continue burning calories throughout the day.  Performing Powerbodyz workouts each week, using just your own body weight and performed ANYWHERE- will get you RESULTS!  So, keep up the great work and just think of the extra calories your burning all day long after those intense workouts :)

Nutrition Lesson:  Olive Oil (since it's an important part of the Cleanse)
Olive oil is a Mediterranean staple.  It's a great alternative to cooking with butter.  Some studies have shown that by replacing 2 T of olive oil for saturated fat (it's a monounsaturated fat), you can lower your cholesterol.    EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil!) also has anti-inflammatory properties.  So, use olive oil instead of butter or mayo when cooking.

For the Cleanse it's important (if you don't add enough of it to your cooking you should take 2 T of olive oil every night before bed).  Per Dr Junger, "Olive oil facilitates transit by lubricating the walls" of your intestines.  When taken at night it will also, "improve bowel elimination, provide anti-inflammatory fats, kill germs and enhance fat burning, stimulate the gall bladder and liver to move bile clearing the liver system, promote bone formation, inhibit blood clot formation, and promote hormonal balance."  Whew... lots of good stuff.

Keep going on the Cleanse- I am so proud of everyone!  Don't forget to sign up for the email distro list, become a blogger Follower, and "like" HBHL on Facebook.  Also- coming shortly... you should be able to "Pin" HBHL for Pinterest.  I'll keep you posted on that...

Have a wonderful week!
